trying something different

mom's trying something different. it's called 'self care'. mom's tired, crabby, and sad. instead of pushing (mom's good at pushing), we're going to take a couple of days off. we'll turn off the computer, and then cuddle and nap.

there's nothing to worry about...we're going to be fine. friendly purrs are welcome!

with much love (and gratitude for the kindness and generosity that we've seen over the past few weeks),

visiting my cousin

i visited daisymae maus this morning. her mom is sending out lots of secret paws presents today. that reminded mom that ours have to get going too. she and i went shopping, so now it's time to wrap everything up and send it off in the mail. we put our heads together to shop for the kitty that suzanne had...so that her secret paw will still get fun stuff. thanks for the reminder, dmm!

today before going to the office, mom has to go to an interesting shop in ballard (the scandinavian area of seattle--ja sure, you betcha) to a place called archie mcphee. they have a store front and an on-line catalog. anyway, mom's got to pick this up (for a party at work). if you like goofy novelty things--including some off-the-wall stuff, this is definitely the place to go!

what do you want for christmas?!?
guess what? i was my own 8000th visitor!

The Great Nap In

I was going to call it the 'Great American Nap In', and then decided I want all my friends around the world to be able to enjoy this too.

Most cats practice a balanced diet of rest: sleep, doze, drowse, nap, snooze. Many of us spend many more than half the hours of the day devoted to this diet.

Please post a picture of yourself in the middle of your most delicious form of rest...and let us know how many hours today were spent on that activity.

I'll start

I can hold this position for at least 6 hours at a stretch. There are other places that are comfy as well. I'll try to get pictures of those nap sites today.

Mom: i'm not usually sentimental...i don't scrapbook, don't usually catalog the photos i take. i have a few things from my parents that i hold onto fiercely as they are reminders of relationships that aren't available to me now.

as cat mom--more particularly as suzanne's cat mom--it's a little different. i have the many pictures of her that i have taken in the past two months. i'm so glad i've got a camera.

after suzanne crossed the bridge on the 11th, i started to look for something that i could wear, that i would always have. i didn't want clothing as that wears out. as i looked, i found a pretty ring of a curled up and sleeping cat. my pretty girl. and it's shiny.

see mom's crooked fingers? they're hereditary. when she puts her hands together, the tips of her index fingers are almost an inch apart because they curve so much!

(mom's hands are much too shaky for a camera without an image stabilizer! we're going to upgrade soon!)

what's a mancat to do

can you believe what my dad and pounce did today? check out my dad's blog for the details. it's definitely a WOW!

so we're all here whooping it up. dad and pounce have started their honeymoon. peach and ali are all lovey-dovey. marilyn and mickey are reading poetry to each other.

the whole wedding party hit the spa before the wedding party, so i'm looking my best. let's see...what shall an unattached mancat do today?

first, there's dinner. shintaro looks like it might be the spot...the decor matches my fur and eyes!

i thought about doing some shopping, but i'm not all that into clothes. Armani, Dior, YSL. there's got to be something else to do here.

how about a seat in the front row for a performance of Cirque Du Soleil?

a little tour through the casino. i think i'll stop at the wheel...

after a nice encounter with lady luck, i'm heading to bed...take a look at this suite!

my own peach-y meme

My Peach-y sister has asked me to do her meme.

1} Favorite season? Spring, please. "Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the birdies is!"
2} Favorite colors? Blue and brown...to go with my furs.
3} Favorite room? Wherever there's a place to drowse and doze.
4} Do you like dogs? Maybe. Maybe not.
5} Ever been in an airplane box? NO!!!!! Not in the least bit interested, either.
6} Do you have the get bathed? Yes. A bath is part of my lion cut.
7} Are you in love? I think I'll plead the 5th Amendment at the moment. There are a few kitty girls who are quite intriguing (*dreamy look in eyes).
8} Where would you like to travel to? the deck
9} What do you ignore? mom calling me
10} How many lives have you used up? maybe one.
11} Do you have any dark secrets? none that I'm willing to admit today. mol
12} What is your favorite holiday? any holiday when we get lots of company!
13} Water or milk? cold fresh water--out of a bottle not the tap
14} Why do you blog? I blog because Suz enjoyed it so much, and I'm getting to love it too. Mom says she hasn't felt this connected in a LONG time.
15} Are you into extremes? Extreme dinner
16} Favorite TV shows? I'm not really into tv, although I do love a freshly made lap
17} Are you a pesty lap cat? Yes! mom keeps asking me to sit next to her instead of on her. Can I help it if I want to lay on her face?
18} Inside or outside cat? Inside. sigh.
19} What makes you happy? Fresh catnip, dinner served on time, a snack before bed.
20} Your most embarrassing moment? I'm not easily embarrassed, and can't remember when I was.

Wanna play along? Go right ahead! this is a fun meme.

my favorite name

of all the names i listed yesterday, my favorite one is benjamonster. i feel powerful and mancatly!

some cats have asked about 'benji' as a nickname. it's not a favorite. mom has never called me that, and usually doesn't let anyone else call me that either. the prohibition has been lifted for dad.

suzanne didn't like suzy, so mom didn't call her that.

mom has talked about a cloak for me for halloween. if she could get this cloak in blue, i just might consider it.

a new layout

I've been working on a new layout...one that fits me--Benjamin Fuzz. What do you think? Are the colors easy enough to read?

Btw, there's been some terrific snuggling going on here this weekend. Just what we needed!

messing about with 'My BlogLog'

mom's messing about with mybloglog, trying to get me established with my picture and all that fun stuff. she closed the account for awhile because she didn't want to comment as suzanne. the folks at mybloglog tell us that they're going to change the name so it'll be me that you see. we've asked for benjamin 2 or benjamin fuzz. given that i'm dropping the '2', i'd like it to be 'benjamin fuzz'.

'Just A Cat'

mom read the 'just a cat' poem this past week...about how we're not just cats...we're members of the family. now she can't find it. does someone have it who can send it on over? thanks!

found it! it was on my sister peach's blog!

here it is...

~~~Just A Cat~~~
From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a cat,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a cat.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a cat.”
Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a cat.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a cat,” but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a cat,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a cat” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it’s “just a cat,” then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.” “Just a cat” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.
“Just a cat” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of “just a cat”, I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a cat” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a cat” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a cat”, but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man or woman.”
So the next time you hear the phrase “just a cat” just smile… because they “just don’t understand.”
another change
well, now that mom's home, and i've got her attention, we're going to make another change. well actually, two changes. the first change is that i am officially dropping the 2 from my name. i'm no longer benjamin2 or ben2. it's ok if you still call me that, but i am going to sign my posts and comments as ben.
the second change is the name of the blog. it's now 'the fuzz factor'. you've seen me. i'm a fuzzy guy. (yes, i've heard the murmurings of another lion-cut...but i'll still be fuzzy! heh)
and third...oh wait, this isn't so much a change as something to be glad about: mom's staying home this weekend. we're going to hang out, snuggle, cuddle, and nap.
and this one isn't a change, just a complaint!
mom told aunt donna that she was thinking about spoiling me. even 150 miles away, my ears pricked up (mmm, catnip, treats, tummy rubs). then--can you believe this?--aunt donna said 'maybe you should spoil yourself a bit'. waaah!
mom's home
mom just got home. we've been having a little love session before she starts to unload the car with all her stuff. i think she's really glad to be home!
changes
mom toni: ben is eager to blog. it's not meant to be any disrespect suzanne. there is plenty of mourning here.
ben: wow...any of the small changes i make to start managing our blog change suz's layout...all the way back to the beginning! please don't think i'm disrespecting her...i'm not! i wasn't always extra-nice to her, but i did love her, and i know how much mom loved her! i think you all loved her too.
i don't live under the bed...unless mom's mad at me...which was only if i played too hard with suzanne. i love company and making friends with anyone who comes over. i'm pretty sure i'm handsome, and that everyone else thinks i am too. i love to play...and will drag my toys all over the house. believe it or not, i'm a little afraid of the whirly bird that my cousin daisymae maus sent!
human food doesn't interest me at all. i'm picky about snacks...i ate suzanne's dairy flavored temptations because that's what mom bought. i'll try to convince her to be more adventurous in my snacks.
i'm not a lap sitter. i like to sprawl on mom's chest so she can't see her book or watch tv. sometimes, i get so close, all she can breathe is my fur! i'm a bit of a rascal.
finally, please keep purring and purraying for mom. i know she's sad. she cries. and then she hugs me hard.
i'm looking forward to getting to know you...and to having your company while mom's out of town.
tuesday morning
early, with ben2 snuggled between my wrists as suzanne used to. he has been attentive with his rumbly purr and soft fur.
i'll be out of town from wednesday through friday. i had hoped to find someone to stay with ben so he won't be too lonely. it looks, however, like he will have some company, but spend the night alone. i feel sad for him. update: i'm leaving tuesday night instead of wednesday morning, so ben will have another night to himself. feel free to come on over and keep him company!
if you can get away for a short while, please teleport over to spend some time with him. he's got lots of nip, plenty of toys, and good snacks. he'd be happy to share!
i will write more about suzanne as i'm able. please know that your kind words mean more to me than i can currently express! the tears have been plentiful and the pain deep. thank you for helping me to let her go with love.
the journey
My sweet child has made the trip to the Rainbow Bridge this morning. As she was crossing, she rested her head on my shoulder and took her last breath. I stayed with her, stroking her soft fur, talking with her about others she'll meet at the Bridge, and how much I love and will miss her.
Your kindness, love and support have made this horribly difficult time much easier to bear.
rough weekend
suzanne's mama:
suzanne's improvement was short. she's not had a good weekend...not eating, drinking lots, not wanting to cuddle. we're spending a quiet day together, and will be making a very tough decision tomorrow.
ben2 has visited a blog or two and may do more of that as time goes on. suzanne asks that you be as welcoming and loving to him as you have been to her.
my first five days
mama toni: we just read daisy's first five days, and i decided to tell you about suzanne's first five with me.
day 1: july 3, 1991. suzanne arrived with the newspaper carrier. she was approximately 4 weeks old, and very very tiny. when she was put on the floor, she explored timidly, and then went to hide.
day 2: july 4, 1991. suzanne drank a little kmr (kitten milk replacer), purred a little, and then went to hide.
day 3: july 5, 1991. suzanne drank a little more kmr, purred a little, and then went to hide.
day 4: july 6, 1991. suzanne drank a bit more kmr, purred a little more, and then went to hide.
day 5: july 7, 1991. suzanne drank a little more kmr. she purred a little. she tried to hide, but i picked her up for some cuddling. she settled against my chest and looked into my eyes. she said 'mama?' i said 'yes, i'm your mama.' from then, she sat on my lap, slept with me, and followed me around. she meowed and i answered. she became my daughter on that day.
if you'd like to play this meme, please feel free to do so.
Shoes!
mama wears ugly shoes. yep. ugly. actually UGLY. she says they go with nothing, so she wears them with everything! (occasionally, she buys cheapies to wear in the summer time so she doesn't ruin her good ones)
she has shoes, clogs and sandals. she said it reminds of her english department in college: something to offend everyone!
newsflash! read all about it...
June 7, 2007
Seattle, WA
The Surgeon General announced today that there are miraculous benefits to having your friends and loved ones purr for you. The announcement is made after Suzanne ('Suz') ate dinner and a snack last night, breakfast this morning and dinner this evening. She met her mama at the door today with a friendly meow and a stroke around the ankles. She followed her mama everywhere until her dinner was put into her special ceramic 'meow' dish, and then she ate all of it and is now sitting in the sun in the window.
The surgeon general invites everycat who has any type of ailment to request purrs from friends and family, as the purrs stimulate rapid healing.
the lady at the grocery store
there's a big blessing going to the lady at the grocery store who gave mama one of the jars of baby food that she was buying for her kitty. i've been hungrily lapping at the plate for about 10 minutes. i'm pretty sure mama will give me more if i want.
mama here...suz has had the diagnosis of kidney failure for nearly a year. the doctor recommended the kidney diet, and she refused to eat it. i wasn't willing to force her as she's already so tiny, and i wasn't sure she'd survive the wait. so i've fed her what she's wanted to eat. for the most part she's done well, but like i mentioned earlier, she's been sliding and i've been watching it.
when i got home, though, she met me at the door, rubbed my ankles and asked for something to eat. that seems like a good step!
thank you sooooo much for the purrs...i know they help. it's been good to feel them swirling around us today.
know that you--each of you--is well-loved by us!
a little update: suz ate half of a 2.5 oz jar of chicken baby food! i gave her a little and she licked the bowl clean, so i gave her some more and she ate that too. she walked away licking her lips.
dona nobis pacem
some purring is needed
this is mama toni. suzanne's had a rough evening. she's not eating much lately, and what she does eat usually comes up again. she didn't beat me to bed tonight, and in fact, didn't even come when i called her. i came to get her, and she lay on her pillow looking at me with sad eyes. she's not purring much, even when she's cuddled into my arms.
i've watched her lose ground over the past weeks...she weighs less than five pounds, she has less energy, and less sparkle. even though i know it's coming, i'm not ready for her to make the journey to the bridge.
if you're the purring type, will you please purr for her?
Anastasia of the Cat Realm tagged me for the 7 random things meme.
1. i have a bit of saggy fur at my tummy. mama loves to bury her hands in it.
2. i wear pajama fur to sleep. pajama fur is when my fur lays light and smooth, and is extra-soft to the touch.
3. i wash mama's face. i started doing this when ben1 went to the bridge, and have been doing even more of it since we moved in february.
4. i like to scratch on the sofa. mama says 'no!', and i stop. after i use the scratching post, mama says 'good girl!' and i come over for pets and kisses.
5. even though i'm 16, i like to knead on mama. sometimes i drool. sometimes i draw blood (clippy claws time!).
6. sometimes i wish i weren't so skittery so that i could go places with mama. i think we'd have fun. we'd be adventurers! i've got the beginning of a theme song, too: 'here is the tale of a cat named suz...' (sung to the beverly hill billies tune)
7. i insist that mama share her dinner with me. one bite for her, one for me. if she has two bites, i put out a paw to remind her it's my turn!
i'm tagging baby mao for the 7 random things meme. i'll also tag any other cat who would like to be share the 7 random things!
terrific tuesday
Head over to my sister's blog to see the LOVELY artwork she made! She's so talented...in addition to being beautiful (just scroll down a post or two on her blog and you can see some pictures of her).
first try at photo hunters: ART
mama's dad, orland newman (6/18/18-1/26/98), was an artist. he made things from wood and copper. besides being mama's dad, he's my grandpa, daisymae maus's grandma's dad, daisymae's mom's grandpa, and daisymae's great grandpa! (family...whew!)
don't be scared...it's art!
mama LOVES this one
mama used to wear this on her suit lapel
grandpa used a small piece of lava rock from mt st helen to make this pretty little rose bouquet stand up
mama has had this rose on her desk ever since grandpa made it for her in 1990
Friday Feast
Appetizer
Name something you think is “the best.”
Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream...thick, unscented hand cream.
Soup
On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 highest), how stressed are you today?
Maybe a 3. I'm on vacation
Salad
What kind of cleanser do you use to wash your face?
Water. My facial skin is too dry for most cleansers, and I'm too lazy to do much else.
Main Course
Tonight is a blue moon! What is something that you believe only happens “once in a blue moon.”
I get enough sleep.
Dessert
When was the last time it rained where you live?
Let me go check my car. There's a leak that lets water in the passenger side foot pan. If the carpet's wet, or there's standing water, it rained today. All joking aside, it rained earlier this week. We are not known as the 'Pacific Northwet' for nothing!
family friday
yesterday, oscar adopted me as his daughter and we're now family for each other. we're going to adopt miss peach to be dad's other daughter and my sister.
families aren't always about blood relationships--or even resemblances (although i do resemble my dad). families are sometimes about the ones we're close to, the ones we connect with, the ones we love and who love us.
in many ways, the cat blogosphere is a big family. we care about each other, are considerate, compassionate, generous, kind, and loving.
for some of our non-blogging friends, blogging might seem to be a silly venture, but for those of us who are here often, we achieve a very real connection with a world-wide community. how lucky we are!
my dad, oscar
my soon to be adopted sister miss peach
my brother, benjamin the second
my cousins, daisymae maus and the feline americans
feel free to do your own 'family friday'...you can link here to let us know who's in your family!
